William Byron will start on the Busch Pole for Sundayâs Bojanglesâ Southern 500 (6 p.m. ET, NBCSN/NBC Sports App, MRN, SiriusXM) after putting together the fastest single-car run during Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series qualifying at Darlington Raceway on Saturday afternoon.
The Hendrick Motorsports driver piloted his No. 24 to a speedy lap of 172.487 mph to earn his fourth pole of the season.
Right behind him was defending Southern 500 winner Brad Keselowski in the No. 2 Team Penske Ford at 172.088 mph.
Rounding out the top five were Kyle Larson in the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, Kurt Busch in the No. 1 CGR Chevrolet and Daniel Suarez in the No. 41 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford.
Series points leader Kyle Busch placed 33rd on the charts after experiencing an issue with his engine during his lap.
The No. 95 Leavine Family Racing Toyota of Matt DiBenedetto failed pre-qualifying inspection twice on Saturday. As a result, NASCAR ejected a crew member (car chief) for Sundayâs Bojanglesâ Southern 500 and will dock the team 15 minutes of practice time at the next event.
