Denny Hamlin has undergone successful surgery on his left shoulder, Joe Gibbs Racing announced.

Hamlin had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum. Dr. Patrick Connor of the Charlotte Surgery Center performed the surgery, and Hamlin is expected to be fully recovered for the start of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season.

Earlier this month, Hamlin revealed his plans to have surgery once the season was over.

“It’s something that has been nagging (me) really for years,” Hamlin said at Texas Motor Speedway. “I’ve had shoulder issues. It just got to the point where it was really bad and got it scanned and figured out what it was. It hadn’t really affected me in the car at all. That part has really been fine.”

Denny Hamlin is introduced before the NASCAR season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Hamlin said he doesn’t know what led to the injury.

Having qualified for the Championship 4, Hamlin finished 10th in the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway and fourth in the final standings behind teammate and champion Kyle Busch. At Homestead, the No. 11 FedEx team suffered an overheating problem from tape on the front grille that led to an unscheduled pit stop.

The 2020 season begins with the Daytona 500 on February 16. Hamlin is the defending winner.
