After Denny Hamlin took the checkered flag at last Saturday’s Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race, the NASCAR world has two weeks off until turning its attention toward the 2019 Bojangles’ Southern 500 at the Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina, on Sept. 1, 2019.
As we look ahead to next Sunday’s race, let’s examine a few drivers to keep an eye on when building your fantasy team.
Denny Hamlin has been an absolute force in recent appearances. Including wins at the Gander RV 400 at Pocono Raceway on July 28 and Saturday’s Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Hamlin now boasts top-3 finishes in five of his last six starts and top-5 finishes in each of his last six races. Beyond Hamlin’s current streak of success, he has won this event twice in the past (2010, 2017) and also boasts the highest average finishing position (6.2) at Darlington Raceway in Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ history. Overall, Hamlin has seen a ton of career success at Darlington, posting 11 top-10 finishes and and seven top-5 finishes in his 13 total starts on this track. In other words, spanning every one of his performances at Darlington, Hamlin has finished in the top 10 more than 84 percent of the time and in the top five more than 53 percent of the time.
Barring a mechanical issue that forced him to the garage Saturday night, Kevin Harvick is another name trending in the right direction in recent performances ahead of the Bojangles’ Southern 500. Harvick won the Consumers Energy 400 for the second straight year on August 11, and excluding his 39th-place finish at Bristol, he averaged a 3.75 finish across his previous four races. Beyond Harvick’s victory at this event in 2014, he also has a great history at Darlington, posting 11 top-10 finishes and field-leading nine top-5 finishes in his 22 starts at this track.
Kyle Larson has a limited history at Darlington, but he’s certainly wowed us with the opportunities he’s seen thus far. While Larson has never won an event at Darlington, he has posted two top-5 finishes and four top-10 finishes in his five total starts at this track. Larson has also been hot lately, finishing eighth or better in five of his last six races and averaging a 5.5 place finish in his last four performances ahead of next Sunday’s race.
